Trenchless Codes

Applying Trenchless Techniques developed elsewhere, in developing nations, where they may be alien to the local conditions, needs substantial retrospective look over their working systems with reference to the local requirements to evaluate and establish their suitability. In cases, where there is disharmony between the local requirements and the technique deliverables, evolving systemic modifications to indigenize them.

Since this process requires substantial resources and time investment, in India, till now, Trenchless Techniques have been used on a case to case basis and such evaluation, though needed, could not be done in a major way.

With the advent of Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) projects in 63 cities across India, situations are fast evolving where India can effectively develop these codes. IndSTT, the apex organization to promote the application of Trenchless Technology in India and other South Asian Nations, has embarked upon a major initiative to develop the Standards and Specifications of Trenchless Technology Techniques Suiting Indian Conditions.

The initiative started with the declaration of JnNURM by the Government of India in December 2005 where it was evident that the application of Trenchless Techniques for urban renewal are bound to grow substantially. IndSTT jointly with Construction Industry Development Council established a Trenchless Technology Task Force of JnNURM under the auspices of the Chapter on Construction in the 11th Plan of Government of India. The task force in its first meeting on 28th March 2007 decided to constitute a working group to  establish Codes of Practice Suiting Indian Conditions.
