Why dig Trenches when there are better solutions
5. Technical Sessions
Technical sessions covered following topics:
1. Introduction to Trenchless Technology
2. Subsurface Utility Engineering and Geotechnical Techniques and Buried Pipeline Condition Assessment.
3. Scope of Works for Approved Trenchless Techniques.
4. Standard Operating Procedures for Trenchless Projects.
5. Trenchless Technology Technique Selection Process.
6. Risk Mitigation Measures for Trenchless Technology Projects.
7. Contractual & Technocommercial Guidelines for Trenchless Technology Projects.
8. Trenchless Technology Project Execution and Supervision.
6. Technical Books
For enhancement of the knowledge base of the participants, following IndSTT publications were provided to participants free of cost:
1. Basics of Trenchless Technology.
2. Trenchless Technology Selection Guidelines.
3. Standard Operating Procedures for Trenchless Technology.
It is expected that these publications would be useful to the participants in their projects. During the workshop, participants were explained about the books and their usages.
7. Practicum Sessions
In addition to technical sessions, there were two trenchless practicum sessions, conducted for the first time in the world. In these sessions, a real life situation for underground sewerage scheme was given to the workshop participants with the details and information about duty conditions, site impediments, and other related information. They were presented with the following questions:
Practicum 1
1. Explain your understanding of project constraints. Can open cut be used in this project?
2. What geotechnical inspection methods should be employed for the project?
3. Which Trenchless Method would be most appropriate in given situations and constraints?
4. What should be the solution for individual House Service Connections?
Practicum 2
1. Develop a tentative stepwise scope of work.
2. Develop a tentative Bill of Quantities.
3. What would be the estimated cost of project?
4. Propose a contract scheme for project execution.
5. Draft Project timeline based on method primarily identified.
6. Propose Project Execution Scheme to mitigate the risks as low as reasonably possible.
All the participants were provided a copy of the input booklet and the question paper set for reference and usage for arriving at the decision.
The responses displayed that the participants were able to demonstrate their capacities in appropriate technology selection, identification of proper geotechnical investigation, individual connections, empirical scope of works, and related quantities, broad estimates of costs and other inputs necessary for developing the initial feasibility report .
8. Program Evaluation
In general participants found the program quite informative and interesting and desired to have longer programs. Summary of session wise responses are as below:
