HDD Good Practices Guidelines

Chapter 4

Equipment Selection Guidelines for Directional Drilling Projects

Principal component of directional drilling operations is the drilling rig and its selection therefore is the most crucial part of the project execution. In addition to the rig the tooling also has an important role in the success of any drilling project. This section deals with the guidelines for selecting the equipment for HDD operations.

Factors Influencing Equipment Selection

Entire drilling process is conducted by the Direction Drilling Rig. The drilling process has the following parts:

1.                   Applying thrust for boring/drilling;

2.                   Applying torque, again for boring/drilling;

3.                   Providing pulling force to backream and overcome the drag force;

4.                   Maintaining directional and trajectory control;

5.                   Laying of pipes.

Based on above the most important factor for the rig selection is its power or the capacity to deliver the above services. Next would be the housing or the sizing of the equipment which get restricted due to the working or the site conditions. Based on the above the factors influencing the equipment selection are as under:

          Subsurface conditions

          Power Required

          Site Access

          Alignment

          Curvature

          Size

          Length

          Burry Depth
