HDD Good Practices Guidelines

Chapter 7

Factors Influencing Directional Drilling Projects & Drilling Fluids

HDD operations are dependent upon several external factors. This section is dealing with such factors. To initiate we shall be discussing the summary of parameters affecting the execution of horizontal drilling. Subsequently we shall be discussing the drilling fluids which have the maximum impact over the HDD operations.

PARAMETERS INFLUENCING HDD JOB SITE:

  •        nature of the terrain

  •        ground water and soil permeability

  •        presence of obstacles if any

  •        type of pipe or the pipes to be installed,

  •        length of the drive,

  •        radius of the curvature,

  •        characteristics of the mud and incidence of lubrication,

  •        characteristics of the rig,

  •        regularity of the profile, steering and guiding,

  •        preliminary negligence,

  •        surroundings of the site and its environment,

  •        execution (details) timing or timeframe,

  •        climatic conditions.
