Why dig Trenches when there are better solutions
IndSTT is proud to present the rapporteur's report on the show to provide the details about the show to interested stakeholders with intent to invite them to work with IndSTT in promoting Trenchless Engineering. The report provides the recommendations and IndSTT welcomes the industry stakeholders to consider these and work with it, so that the goals of technology promotion are achieved.
1. Show Overview
A Grand International Show, dubbed 'No Dig India Show 2015' with the theme, 'Trenchless Technology for Building Smart Cities' was organized by IndSTT at Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi (India). The two-day show concluded successfully on 17th December 2015. The event, sponsored by Rosewood Projects (P) Ltd as Principal Sponsor, L R Sharma & Co. as Main Sponsor; Gypsum Structural Pvt. Ltd., Urmi Trenchless Pvt. Ltd. and Michigan Engineers Pvt Ltd. as Sponsors, witnessed several activities during the show. Those included release of IndSTT publications, Interactive sessions, holding various presentations, and various trenchless equipment displays & live demonstrations with stand displays.
Event saw the release of following several Trenchless books to benefit delegates and subsequently other readers. These books include:

. Schedule of Rates for Construction Contracts Employing Trenchless Technology 2016
. Survey of Trenchless Equipment Operators 2015
. No Dig India Journal December 2015 Souvenir Issue, &

Copies of these publications, except the Schedule of Rates, were provided to the registered delegates of the show. Other interested stakeholders can request for copies on payment of the applicable fee.
During the 2 day (16th-17th December 2015), sessions on various tracks dealing different aspects of Trenchless Engineering were held along with the equipment / machinery / product display and their live demonstrations. The workshop drew a wide array of participants from the public, private, business and civil society sectors in India and abroad. For list of participants please click here.
The show saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Singhania University for conducting joint B.Voc Program in various fields.
2. Inaugural Session
The show began with the lighting of the lamp by the distinguished guests. Mr. Chander Verma, Chairman, IndSTT delivered inaugural speech and welcomed the guests. In the speech he invited the participants of the shows and presented an overview of the event. Mr. Salahuddin Ahmad, former Chief Secretary, Govt. of Rajasthan was the Chief Guest of the event. The guests of honour of the Inaugural session included Mr. Peng Wong, Managing Director, Drillto Inc.,, China, Dr. P S Rana, G.C. member, IndSTT, Dr. Ravinder Singhania, Chancellor, Singhania University and Dr. P.R. Swarup, Secretary, IndSTT.
3. Technical Sessions
The show was structured into Six technical tracks spread over two days. Each track was modeled on issues linked to application of Trenchless Technology in the development of Smart cities. Day one covered the Trenchless requirement, and projects for smart cities. Day two covered trenchless services, and trenchless projects. Details of different tracks are provided hereafter.
After the inaugural, three sessions on the track "Assessment for trenchless requirement for smart cities" were conducted on the first day. Prof. (Dr.) Niranjan Swarup gave a presentation on "Assessment of trenchless requirement for smart cities" that provide the amenities to dwellers in a most sustainable manner by optimizing finite resources. Various speakers who gave thought provoking presentation on the subject were Dr. Sanjay Rana, Director, PARSAN Overseas (P) Limited, and Mr. Ashutosh Bharadwaj, Director Corporate Affairs, Construction Industry Development Council.
The post lunch session on the First day was on the track 'Risk mitigation for smart city trenchless projects". Several presentations were made on the subject. The session discussed such challenges & modes of Subsurface Construction Risk Mitigation in Smart Cities. The session key note was delivered by Dr. Niranjan Swarup followed by Enhancing Drill Rig Productivity by Mr. Ehteshamul Haque, General Manager, DCI India Pvt. Ltd..
Third Session was "Advisory services for trenchless projects for smart cities". Session introduction was given by Dr. Niranjan Swarup, Director General, INDSTT. This session discussed issues related to Trenchless Advisory service important for Smart Cities. Various speakers who gave thought provoking presentation on the subject were Mr. K. Ashok Natarajan, CEO, Tamilnadu Water Investment Company Ltd. and Mr. Ranjan Kumar, HOD, Civil Engg. NGF Collage.
The day, then saw the Raffle draw conducted by the Principal Sponsor, M/s Rosewood Projects (P) Ltd. wherein several prizes were awarded through a lucky draw. The day ended with welcome cocktail dinner hosted jointly by the Principal Sponsor M/s Rosewood Projects (P) Ltd. and IndSTT.
On the second day, remaining three technical sessions were conducted. The first session was on the topic 'Contracting trenchless services for smart cities'. During this session presentations were made by Dr. Gopal Rai, CEO, R&M International & Ms. Silky Agrawal, Director, Geo-Carte, IIT Gandhinagar, apart from Dr. Niranjan Swarup. Dr. Rai spoke on Strengthening of bridge by Pre Stressing at JNPT, GPR. Ms. Silky Agarwal delivered the presentation on elaborative account of GPR techniques. Prof. (Dr.) Niranjan Swarup presented on Contracting Trenchless services for smart cities
Second session on the Second day was on the track 'Detailed Project reports for trenchless projects for smart cities'. Several presentations were made on the subject. Speakers highlighted the detailed Trenchless projects report require for smart cities. Prof. (Dr.) Niranjan Swarup delivered his presentation on Trenchless project execution must be dynamic to meet unanticipated challenges. Mr. Tarit Kumar Mukhopadhyay, Sr. Advisor, PHE. STUP Consultant Pvt. Ltd & Team Leader/DSMC at Agartala, under Urban Development, Dept., Govt of Tripura delivered presentation on Application of Trenchless Technology Method for Up gradation to Smart City development: Case Study.
The post lunch session was on the track 'Trenchless project management for smart cities'. Prof. (Dr.) Niranjan Swarup discussed Trenchless project management & supervision for smart cities. This session discussed matters pertaining to Trenchless Project Management for Smart Cities. Mr. Sunir Garg, Director Technical, Gypsum Structural India Pvt. Ltd. followed with the topic Rehabilitation of ancient non circular sewer infrastructure with minimum to zero social disruption through an article presentation. Subsequently Mr. Dipen Kava, Director, Urmi Trenchless Technology Pvt. Ltd, discussed the Increasing the capacity of Storm Water Drains / Water Lines across Railway Tracks by Micro tunneling: Opportunities & Challenges.
Technical sessions were followed by the interactive session by Jiangsu Goodeng Engineering Machinery Assembling Co. Ltd. wherein Goodeng presented its capabilities to trenchless stakeholders. In addition to HDD items, Goodeng also indicated the plans about converting the HDD rig to pipe replacement tool by making it capable to do pipe reaming. Audience was quite enthused by participating in the workshop.
The day concluded with the distribution of certificates followed by farewell cocktails and dinner hosted jointly by Jiangsu Goodeng Engineering Machinery Assembling Co. Ltd. and IndSTT.
4. Exhibition
The exhibition was a great success wherein 45 stands & open display space various trenchless equipment and products were displayed by the exhibitors. The exhibition was visited by numbers of visitors who got the first hand information and feel of different trenchless equipment and their usage. For list of exhibitors please click here.
5. Show Conclusion & Recommendations
. The show concluded with the distribution of certificates to the participants. Through the show IndSTT was successful in developing the recommendations for the action to be taken. The main action points are listed below;
. Urban Trenchless Project are challenging.
. Project Management needs to follow the urban engineering tenets
. Success depends on adequate actions towards meeting urban challenges.
. In addition, Activities need to conform to sound engineering practices.
. Utilities thus created need to perform 24X7 and the Project Management continues for the entire life cycle (Cradle to Grave) of the structure.
6. Show Achievements
Through the show following thrust areas have been identified:
1. Establishing National, State & City level Trenchless Advisory Committees as proposed in smart city initiative.
2. Conducting City Level Trenchless Road Shows to assist ingress of Trenchless Technology in city missions in association with city level committee members.
3. Enhancing Trenchless Equipment Operators Registry
4. Enhancing No Dig India journal circulation to increase its reach.
