Why dig Trenches when there are better solutions
1. Welcome Note
Good Morning Ladies & Gentlemen, I am Er. Gurumurthy Bharadwaj Convenor (South), IndSTT-NDIS17 Technical Committee. It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all on behalf of Indian Society for Trenchless Technology (IndSTT) in the Valedictory and Wrap up session of 'No Dig India Show- 2017', that is the flagship show of INDSTT and present its rapporteur report.
It is our proud privilege to present the Conference Rapporteur Report to the participants. The event was structured based on the papers and presentations collected in response to our call for papers focused at Standardisation of Trenchless Applications. Each session was developed to address a specific aspect of standardisation and paper selection followed this focus approach. Details of event are now discussed.
2. Event Background
Trenchless Technology has become one of the preferred construction methodology for utility & other subsurface structures. Work execution, however, at times gets complicated due to absence of standard resulting in faulty works, or processes, & structures. Through standardization, one would get desired results from the application of a specific technique variant under a given set of end conditions. This ensures proper project deliverance & underground structure development. Proper growth of the sector, therefore, depends on standardization of techniques. That way, prior to selection and application of any technique, user would be aware about the possible results, & able to take correct decisions for the executing the project in confidence. IndSTT recognizes the above fact & has released the approved techniques list with respective deliverables, scope of works, & other related guidelines to assist industry over the last 23 years.
It has also released codes of practice suiting Indian conditions for 5 most common techniques with one being revised in 2016. It had proposed to revise the remaining four & release those in NDIS2017. In addition to revising the codes, it had also proposed to assist the ingress of newer technology in Indian markets by standardization of those techniques as well. All of this was aimed to be accomplished in No Dig India Show 2017.
3. Event Objectives
For the last one and a half decades efforts of INDSTT have helped to establish this technology in the nation and the actions have nurtured its growth. No Dig India Shows have been instruments of this growth mechanism as they have provided opportunities for scientific discussions, technology promotion, networking and publication of multiple guidelines, both technical as well as commercial.
Main objectives of NDIS 2017 included following:
? Releasing the new approved techniques list with respective deliverables & related guidelines.
? Releasing second editions of the codes of Practice suiting Indian conditions for Cured in Place Pipe, Glass Reinforced Pipe, Pipe Bursting, Microtunneling & Pipe Jacking
? Releasing third edition of code of practice suiting Indian conditions for Horizontal Directional Drilling.
? Revising & releasing commercial framework for trenchless applications.
? Providing inputs about newer trenchless construction methodologies to stakeholders.
? Drawing a road map for conducting City Level Trenchless Road Shows to assist ingress of Trenchless Technology in Government missions in association with city based stakeholders.
No Dig India Show 2017 was aimed at providing inputs to the sector stakeholders for enhancing the productivity, quality and safety in trenchless works.

9. IFTP Workshop
In addition to the conference IFTP workshop was also organised. International Forum for Trenchless Promotion is the latest initiative of IndSTT that is proposed to be a collaborative forum of Stakeholders of Global Trenchless Industry to assist the growth of Trenchless Technology by technology transfer from highly developed to less developed regions internationally by way of cooperation. There are regions, like India, where trenchless technology requirements are essentially high, but availability of matching services is quite low as it is serviced by a limited numbers of technology providers with quite few techniques, & then there are regions with exactly opposite situations, less buyers and more techniques offered. In former, the costs to execute the works gets too high due to high risk factors, limited service providers, lesser indigenization, poor replication, and higher operational costs due to failures, bad or spurious spares and consumables, and lack of awareness. Situations, in the later, are equally bad due to lesser demand forcing the technology developers to recover their investments from this limited demand only again leading to higher costs. It would be for the benefit of all that such technology is shared globally so that the costs could come down at one hand and the technology growth could be accelerated as with higher business volumes the incentives to further the developments also grow.
This workshop was conducted to provide platforms for international collaborations between Indian trenchless technologists and their international counterparts.
10. Exhibition
The Exhibition was a great success wherein 100 stands & open display space of various Trenchless equipment and products were displayed by the exhibitors. Total of fourteen HDD rigs were put on live demonstration by the exhibitors along with live demonstration of other trenchless equipment. The exhibition was visited by numbers of visitors who got the first-hand information and feel of the various Trenchless equipment and their usage.
11. Concluding Remarks
