Trenchless technology is the branch of applied engineering techniques used extensively for construction and rehabilitation works at inaccessible subsurface locations. It involves application of engineering expertise in creating or maintaining underground cavities without excavating continuous trenches. These techniques provide state-of-art solutions to underground construction problems by employing sophisticated and smart equipment and materials remotely. This technology is used to develop and maintain underground networks for water supply and drainage, power and telecommunication transmission systems, oil and gas pipelines and pollution control networks.
With explosive urbanization, our urban spaces are continuously under construction. Requirements of these skills, therefore, are growing by each passing day. So much so that today, for even executing the aboveground works with foundations, basic knowledge of trenchless technology is becoming increasingly important. Several projects are getting delayed because of lack of knowledge of this technology in the executing engineers. Specialization in this sector, at the other hand, opens several doors due to ever increasing demands of this skill base in engineers. Today as there are very few programs of trenchless technology at engineering undergraduate level, the industry needs are being serviced by untrained or, at times, under-qualified individuals who learn at the cost of employer and inflict damages to existing structures or roads and consequential losses to their employers.
Construction or civil engineering graduates do have a very good opportunity to grow in this sector as this is a sunrise sector of construction industry with very few professions with desired knowledgebase as necessary for working. As an engineering graduate, one does have the basic knowledge of construction techniques/equipment and all what is needed is honing the skills to make them useful for this sector. As a fresh graduate engineer, one does have adaptability to learn and understand this technology and practice in the sector.
In India the technology is being promoted by Indian Society for Trenchless Technology (IndSTT). It provides training programs and platform to young engineers to connect with Indian technology solution providers. From 9th to 11 December, 2013, IndSTT is hosting No-Dig India Show, 2013 at New Delhi. To facilitate engineering students to connect with trenchless industry, there are several interactive activities are planned for them and interested students can participate therein.
